THE IMA MANIFESTO

A Level Playing Field
For All Journalists.

Credibility defined by conduct, not corporate affiliation. We are building the professional backbone for the new media age.

SCROLL TO EXPLORE

To protect, empower, and professionalise.

The Independent Media Alliance was founded to rigidly preserve the independence of journalists and new media, while providing the structure they need to operate safely and effectively in the field. You keep creative control of your content, while we fight to keep it that way.

The Cartel Is Controlled.

For too long, the UK media landscape has been controlled by a "cartel" of gatekeeper organisations. While the law—specifically Article 10 of the Human Rights Act—makes no distinction between a BBC reporter and an independent livestreamer, the reality on the street is very different.

Currently, the UK Press Card Authority acts as a closed shop, issuing passes only to those backed by major corporate institutions. This system leaves independent creators, political commentators, and citizen reporters out in the cold.

THE CONSEQUENCE

Independent journalists are frequently treated by police not as newsgatherers, but as protesters or harassers. They face unlawful obstruction, arrest, and intimidation simply for doing their jobs.

The Independent Media Alliance exists to smash this cartel.

Our Vision for the Future

01

Professionalisation Without Control

We believe that independent journalism should be professional, ethical, and respected.

THE VISION:

To move away from the chaotic image of "activists with cameras" toward a sector of recognised New Media

THE METHOD:

By adhering to our strict Code of Conduct and Ethics—covering accuracy, respect, and responsible newsgathering—our members prove that they are "genuine news gatherers" worthy of public trust and police cooperation.

02

Real Protection for Real Risks

We see a future where independent journalists can work without fear of unlawful arrest.

THE VISION:

No journalist should have to fly separately from their children due to fear of airport detention, nor be arrested for filming in a public place.

THE METHOD:

We provide a Secure Press ID that verifies a journalist's status anonymously, protecting their privacy while proving their legitimacy. We back this with a Legal Support Model that provides access to specialist solicitors ready to challenge unlawful police actions.

03

Uniting the Independent Sector

We provide the structure and legitimacy that independent journalists have historically lacked.

THE VISION:

A unified body of independent voices that cannot be ignored or silenced by institutions.

THE METHOD:

By pooling our resources, we provide training, safety guidance, and a collective voice that demands the respect independent media deserves.

Unified independent media voices

Why This Matters

Citizen journalism and new media are now essential pillars of public-interest reporting. They are often the first to capture breaking events and provide authentic, unfiltered perspectives that mainstream outlets miss.
