Creator Authority & Integrity
The Independent Media Alliance is not designed to take away creator authority, infringe on creative editorial or affect new media in any negative way. Our aim is to legitimise independent media and fight for your right to the same kind of respect as mainstream media while letting you control your outlet.
The IMA has in place a Code of Conduct that we expect our members to follow. This is not about controlling your content; it is about strengthening your right to report freely as outlined in Article 10 of the Human Rights Act, which protects your right to hold your own opinions, express your views aloud, or through:
- Published articles, books or leaflets
- Television or radio broadcasting
- Works of art
- The internet and social media
However, authorities often place broad restrictions on this right under the guise of national security, public safety, or preventing disorder.
Restrictions include:
- Protecting national security or territorial integrity
- Preventing disorder or crime
- Protecting health or morals
- Protecting rights and reputations of others
- Maintaining the authority of judges
- Preventing expressions of racial or religious hatred
The IMA's Code of Conduct provides clear guidelines that, if followed, will ensure strength to any claim for abuse of these powers—especially when they are used to silence those who have the right to criticise public institutions without fear of prosecution.
Any restriction on human rights should only ever be imposed to prevent abuses of others' human rights, but unfortunately, "the powers that be" appear to have forgotten that.
If you feel you cannot follow our Code of Conduct, then the IMA is not for you, just as we can't fight for you if you don't follow them.
