Upholding Fundamental Principles

The Independent Media Association (IMA) upholds fundamental journalistic principles, including the Right to Reply (RTR). Any individual who is the subject of a report, particularly when allegations are made against them, should be afforded the opportunity to respond.

This principle applies to all forms of journalism, including independent and citizen journalism, regardless of affiliation with mainstream media organizations.

To promote transparency and legitimacy in independent journalism, the IMA's Code of Conduct mandates that members offer the RTR to subjects of their reports. This includes responses to allegations or any information believed to be inaccurate. While the IMA cannot compel compliance, we facilitate a process for individuals who are unable to secure a direct response from an IMA member. In such cases, affected parties may contact the IMA, and we will endeavor to liaise with the member to implement the RTR.

If it is established that a member has failed to provide this opportunity, they may face disciplinary measures. In severe instances, such as unsubstantiated factual accusations or other violations of the law, membership may be revoked. Although this process may not directly resolve the individual's concern, it contributes to enhancing the credibility of citizen journalists and fostering trust between the public and new media.

Procedure for Invoking the RTR

  1. Contact the Journalist Directly: Exhaust all reasonable efforts to reach the journalist. Most citizen journalists maintain an online presence, offering various contact methods such as social media, email, or website forms.
  2. Contact the IMA: If direct communication proves unsuccessful and you can provide evidence of your attempts, submit a request via the form below. Include all required details to identify the member, along with uploaded proof of your outreach efforts. Your submission will be reviewed promptly.
  3. IMA Investigation: The IMA will examine the report, including the relevant article or video, and assess the evidence of your attempts to contact the member. If it appears that not all reasonable avenues have been pursued, the report may be rejected until sufficient evidence is provided.
  4. Conclusion of Investigation and Disciplinary Action: Upon reviewing the evidence and consulting with the member, a determination will be made regarding any breach of the IMA's terms and Code of Conduct. The member may be required to rectify the issue or, in serious cases involving unlawful actions, face sanctions up to and including expulsion.

"This process does not affect your rights to pursue legal remedies for any infringements or violations of the law, including defamation or other offenses that may have been committed by the member. It is not intended to serve as a substitute for legal recourse. If you believe it is necessary, we recommend consulting your legal representative or contacting the appropriate authorities, such as the police."

"The Independent Media Alliance is not and can not be responsible for anything our members publish. Other than our attempt to remedy any potential infringement and look into our members conduct, we cannot and do not get involved further than that."
