The Right to Report
Is Not a Privilege.

What the Independent Media Alliance Believes

The Independent Media Alliance exists on a simple but radical premise: the right to report is not a privilege granted by broadcasters, editors, or press offices. It is a right.

Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights protects freedom of expression — including the freedom to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority. That right does not expire when your TV contract does. It does not belong only to those with lanyards issued by the mainstream press. It belongs to every person who picks up a microphone, opens a camera, or types a single word in the public interest.

For too long, that right has been treated as conditional — extended to those who play by the establishment's rules and revoked from those who don't. We believe that is wrong. And we are building something to change it.

This is a call to those who still believe in the value of an unfiltered press—individuals who refuse to let censorship, corporate control, or political pressure dictate what can and cannot be said.

The Problem
We're Solving

Independent journalists, citizen reporters, and new media commentators face a structural injustice that rarely gets named directly:

They are expected to carry the same responsibilities as credentialed press — accuracy, accountability, public interest — but are denied the same access, protections, and respect.

Police lines are drawn at their cameras. Press briefings close their doors. Public officials ignore their questions. Institutions that would never dare obstruct a reporter from a national newspaper do so to new media creators without a second thought — because they know there is no body, no badge, and no legal framework to push back.

That is the gap the Independent Media Alliance exists to fill.

THE SOLUTION

What We Are Building

IMA is developing a framework of press standards, press identification, and legal support structures for independent and citizen journalists across the UK. Our goal is not to gatekeep, it is to legitimise. To create a recognised, respected, and legally defensible identity for new media that compels the same treatment the mainstream press receives as a matter of right.

When an IMA-affiliated journalist stands at a police line, we want the law to be on their side — clearly, explicitly, and without argument. When a public institution refuses access, we want there to be a process. A record. A challenge. A consequence.

We are building the infrastructure of press freedom for a media landscape that has already changed — one that the law and the establishment have simply not caught up with yet.

Why We Exist

01

To defend free speech at all levels, ensuring journalists and creators can question, investigate, and inform without intimidation.

02

To protect citizen journalists under existing human rights law, offering education, legal awareness, and advocacy.

03

To legitimize new media, uniting independent reporters under one shared banner of integrity and rights protection.

04

To build a network of advocates—influencers, creators, and ex‑mainstream professionals—who stand with the right to record, report, and reach the public.

Why We Need People Like You

You have something most institutions don't: trust. Millions of people have left traditional media and found you instead. That is not nothing. That is a movement, and movements need frameworks.

We are not asking you to change what you do. We are not asking you to endorse policies or align with any editorial position. We are asking something simpler and more important than that.

We are asking you to believe that the reporters, commentators, and citizen journalists who come after you — the ones who don't yet have your platform or your audience — deserve the same legal protections and institutional respect as anyone holding a BBC lanyard. And we are asking, if you believe that, whether you'd be willing to help us make it real.
