Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about the Independent Media Alliance, our framework, and your protections.

🏗️ Core Philosophy & Autonomy

Why does the IMA grant members full autonomy over their content?

We believe that truth is no longer gatekept and that professional legitimacy shouldn't be a privilege granted by a corporation. Our role is to provide the professional backbone, the accreditation and legal framework, not to act as your editor. We believe in the decentralised truth; as long as you operate within the law and our Code of Conduct, your views and your voice remain entirely your own.

Will the IMA ever tell me what I can or cannot report on?

Never. Our Code of Conduct is not designed to limit what is reported or how it is reported. It is designed to help you remain lawful and build the trust required to be taken seriously by the public and institutions. We are a firewall for the movement, not a filter for your content.

What if my views are controversial or offensive to some?

Freedom of expression, as protected under Article 10 of the Human Rights Act, includes the right to share unpopular or even offensive speech. We back the right of New Media creators to express robust views, provided they do not incite violence or hatred. We believe the public has the right to choose what they consume; speech should not be shut down simply because someone weaponizes a dislike for it.

🛡️ Legal Protection & The Framework

What is the "IMA Legal Framework" and why do I need it?

The framework is a robust set of guidelines based on current UK legislation and case law (such as DPP v Harvey and Doyle v Smith). It is designed to keep you safe in "grey areas" of police engagement and protest reporting. Following this framework ensures you operate with "Clean Hands," which is a requirement for accessing our Legal Disbursement Fund.

Does the law distinguish between me and a "mainstream" journalist?

No. Under UK law, there is no special status exclusive to corporate news outlets. Independent and citizen journalists enjoy the same fundamental rights to film in public, gather information, and protect their sources. The IMA exists to ensure institutions and authorities respect this equality.

How does the IMA help if I am challenged by authorities in the field?

We provide you with a physical and digital Press ID to verify your status as a professional observer. Our Framework provides specific "Best Practices" for interactions, such as asserting your rights under the Public Order Act 2023, which protects journalists from being arrested solely for observing or reporting.

📋 Membership & The Code of Conduct

What are my primary responsibilities as a member?

Your core responsibility is to uphold the IMA Code of Conduct, which focuses on accuracy, honesty, and professional integrity. This includes distinguishing fact from opinion, respecting privacy where there is no public interest, and avoiding "wilful obstruction" of emergency services.

Why do I need an IMA ID card if I'm independent?

While you have the right to film without it, a verified ID helps bypass the common challenge of authorities demanding to know "what outlet you work for". It provides an anonymous, privacy-first standard for professional recognition, allowing you to prove your legitimacy without compromising your personal identity.

Can my membership be revoked?

Only in cases of serious breaches of the Code of Conduct or the Membership Rules, such as impersonating officials, inciting violence, or bringing the IMA into disrepute. We protect the collective reputation of the Alliance to ensure that when one member shows their ID, it carries the weight of 1,200+ ethical voices.

💰 Support & Sustainability

What is the Legal Disbursement Fund?

The Fund is a collective resource intended to defend legitimate, ethical journalism against external threats. Access is a benefit for members who have consistently operated within our ethical boundaries. It ensures that no independent creator has to stand alone against aggressive legal actions or unlawful police overreach.

How does the IMA maintain its own independence?

We maintain strict independence by refusing gifts or payments intended to influence the Alliance. We are built for creators, by creators, funded by members and supporters who believe that the "Media Cartel" should not have a monopoly on the truth.
